There are a million and one different ways to market your business. How do you know which is right?
If you Google “How to market my business”, you get all kinds of articles like ‘42 ideas for your small business strategy’ and ‘the 30 best ways to promote your business.'
Sounds a bit overwhelming, doesn’t it?
Here’s the real secret: there is no magical, perfect, one-size-fits-all approach to marketing. If there was, we probably wouldn’t be here writing this right now!
The truth is every potential strategy COULD work for your business, but you need to pick the right tactics for you. So how do you choose? We’ll tell you!
Focus on your business
To choose the right marketing tactics, you need to start with a deep dive into what’s going on in your business. Sure, you can always look to competitors for inspiration, but spend some time thinking about the marketing you’ve done in the past.
Which campaigns or tactics made you jump for joy, and which do you want to forget ever happened? What was most fun for you and your team? Which tools got you the best results?
Consider your industry and your individual brand. What kind of marketing tactics make sense for the products or services you offer? How would you like your customers to see you? What resources can your team use to create something exciting?
For example, if you’re a clothing retailer, if you sell household items, or vintage figurines of ‘70s Star Wars characters (whatever floats your boat), then the best marketing tactics are probably the obvious ones: you need a beautiful website to display your products and email marketing to keep customers coming back for more.
But what if you’re a theatre company selling seats to a brand new show, or a franchisee owner trying to attract new customers?
Sure, a website might work … but a physical campaign could be even better. A bright and colourful billboard, a poster campaign, or even radio ads are effective to connect with customers to pique interest and let them come to you.
Consider your audience
Can’t get a clear picture of what tactics would make sense for your brand or industry? Consider the tactics which make the most sense for your audience.
If you’ve been in business a while, you probably have a clear understanding of who buys from you and why (and if you don’t, do yourself an overdue favour and go fill out some buyer persona worksheets, for goodness’ sake!).
Once you know WHO they are, it should be easy to find out what platforms they use, where they spend their time online, and how they like to communicate. Then, adjust your tactics to meet them where they are!
If you’re trying to reach a young and hip audience, maybe TikTok is your jam … as long as you don’t use the word ‘hip.’ If your audience is older and more educated, a Google Search or LinkedIn campaign could be a better fit.
Whatever your choice, you can always measure the success of your marketing tactics by how effectively you reach the people you want to speak to.
