Here’s the challenge: On Oct. 24, you will join a dozen or so other business people you don’t know well, in a secret location, with nothing but your jammies, a blanket, and toothbrush for an incredibly awkward sleepover.
If that sounds uncomfortable, imagine moving into a new apartment with only the clothes on your back or a small bag of your things? But it’s not a challenge for charity. It’s your life and you now face the daunting task of making a house a home with little or no resources.
Stepping Up
This is where Home Again Furniture Bank steps in. The not-for-profit organization takes gently used furniture from donors throughout the Avalon region and delivers it to people who need a hand getting a real start when they move into a new place.
To support these efforts, Alisha - founding Penguin and our copy director - is going to get really uncomfortable. After all, you ever see a Penguin sleeping on the floor?
Heads without Beds - Leaders Edition is an annual fundraiser for Home Again Furniture Bank and helps deliver life-saving support to those starting a new chapter.
“It’s a small sacrifice for an introvert to ask for donations and take part in a silly event if that means helping those in our community,” Alisha says. “With the current cost of living crisis and the debilitating housing shortage taking a toll on people around Newfoundland and Labrador, I think strangers seeing me in my pyjamas and with bedhead is something I’m willing to do to help.”
How are you Sleeping?
On any given night, hundreds of people throughout our region sleep on floors, yoga mats, or deflating air mattresses because they don’t have a bed to sleep in. Donations like yours have helped 3,400 individuals and families to create a safe place for them and their kids to sleep. In some cases, ending furniture poverty has been life saving.
Check out Don’s Story to see the difference YOU can make with a donation of any amount.
Please take a second to make a secure donation to help people throughout our community to feel dignity in their own homes. Take a moment and think about what your home would feel like without your sofa, kitchen table, or bed.
