You’re ready to start your email marketing campaign! You’ve built your list, got great content, and are ready to hit send … but wait! You need a really great subject line to draw people in and get them to open those emails.
Don’t worry, we’ve got the tips!
KISS (Keep It Short and Simple) to avoid the Kiss Off
The best headlines are short and snappy. Keep it to five to seven words, so your subject lines aren’t cut off by the email provider and always say something of interest to your audience!
Give Them a Taste
Tease what’s in your newsletter by creating a subject line that’s directly related to the information inside, but keep it vague and make them want more. You can use a question like “Want to know more?” or mention the exclusivity of the information.
Don’t Date It
If you send out a weekly newsletter, it’s tough to come up with a great subject line every time, and some will be duds. However, coming up with something less-than-compelling is better than sending out an email with the subject line as March 30 Newsletter. No one wants to read something that feels so routine.
Make it Spicy
We don’t endorse clickbait headlines but use the concepts behind them to write compelling subject lines. These headlines often include words like “ You won’t believe,” or “Find out how.” These are calls to action and tickle curiosity. Just … don’t promise something in the subject line and not deliver, it’s a surefire way to get unsubscribes.
Get The News
It’s tough to tell a story, explain an event, or describe a program or sale in a couple of words, but the experts have always been newspaper headline writers. Look to your local newspaper and even national ones for examples and emulate their style of giving a quick summary of your newsletter.
Grabbing Attention
Some email newsletters will use emojis or all capital letters in subject lines to grab attention and you can too! Just use them sparingly and know that more of these newsletters will go to spam folders as a matter of course.
